Australia is transitioning from Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) to Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) for airborne contaminants. Many limits are tightening, new limits (including for diesel particulate matter) are being introduced, and the language is changing to emphasise that these are limits that must not be exceeded.
Current WES continue to apply until 30 November 2026. From 1 December 2026, the WEL list becomes the national benchmark (subject to state and territory adoption).
Now is the time to review your chemical risks, check whether current controls will still be sufficient, and update monitoring where needed.
At HAZCON our occupational hygiene team is already helping businesses prepare with practical, on-site assessments and ongoing monitoring (Monthly/Quarterly/Annually). Although we are based in Melbourne and Gippsland, our HSE Consultants regularly travel all over Victoria, NSW, and nationally to service our long-term corporate clients.
