Welding Fume Testing
Welding Fume Testing
Welding is vital to many industries, but it creates hazardous fumes containing metals such as chromium, nickel, and manganese. Without proper controls, workers risk serious health effects.
Health risks include:
- Short-term: Eye, nose, and throat irritation, dizziness, nausea, or “metal fume fever.”
- Long-term: Chronic respiratory illness, neurological damage, and lung cancer. In 2017, welding fumes were classified as a Group 1 carcinogen (cancer-causing to humans).
Legal requirements:
- Under the OHS Regulations 2017, employers must control exposure to hazardous substances, including welding fumes.
- On 18 January 2024, the workplace exposure standard (WES) for welding fumes (not otherwise classified) was reduced from 5 mg/m³ to 1 mg/m³ (8-hour TWA).
- Non-compliance can result in penalties and serious health impacts.
Why testing matters:
- Protects worker health and safety
- Ensures compliance with current laws and exposure standards
- Builds reputation and reduces downtime from illness
