Synthetic Mineral Fibre Monitoring
Synthetic Mineral Fibre Monitoring and Services
Synthetic Mineral Fibres (SMF), also known as Man-Made Mineral Fibres (MMMF), are fibrous materials made from glass, rock, or silica. They are commonly found in insulation (batts, blankets, loose fibre), textiles, reinforced plastics, and high-temperature or acoustic insulation products.

Health risks
Airborne SMF can cause:
- Skin and eye irritation
- Upper respiratory tract irritation
- Potential long-term respiratory effects if exposure is not controlled
Exposure standards (Australia):
- 0.5 respirable fibres per ml of air (f/ml)
- 2 mg/m³ of inspirable dust
These limits are set to protect workers handling or exposed to SMF products.
How Hazcon can help:
- Conduct personal and static SMF monitoring to assess workplace exposure
- Identify SMF materials present in your workplace
- Provide risk assessments and tailored control strategies
- Develop safe work procedures in line with the National Code of Practice for the Safe Use of SMF (NOHSC:2006, 1990)
- Deliver employee training on SMF hazards and safe handling practices
All monitoring and recommendations are carried out in compliance with Australian standards and best practice.
