Asbestos HAZMAT Audit (Div 6)

Division 6 HAZMAT Audit

A ‘Division 6’ hazardous materials audit is an assessment to identify and evaluate hazardous substances in a building or site, such as asbestos, lead, PCBs, and SMF (Synthetic Mineral Fibre). It involves locating hazardous materials, assessing their risks, and documenting findings in a report and register with recommendations for safe management or removal.

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017, an employer or a person who manages or controls a workplace has a duty to ensure that all asbestos containing materials present in the building, which may be disturbed, are identified and removed prior to renovation or demolition works commencing.

Division 6/ Hazardous Materials Audit:

  • Destructive / invasive audit prior to demolition or refurbishment.
  • Review of existing Division 5 Asbestos Register to ensure that it is current and to further investigate previously inaccessible areas including ceilings and subfloors.

If a current asbestos register is already in place and a Division 6 Audit is required for the same building before major works, it usually takes a fraction of the time and cost.

Hazardous Building Materials Audit:

Australian Standard AS2601-2001 – The Demolition of Structures and Safework Australia Demolition Work Code of Practice October 2018 specifies the requirements for a hazardous materials audit to be undertaken prior to demolition and refurbishment work.

HAZCON’s Division 6 Asbestos Audits generally include a Hazardous Building Materials Audit which will determine the presence of:

  • Synthetic Mineral Fibres (SMF)
  • Lead containing paint
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Other materials including ozone depleting substances, stored hazardous chemicals and biological hazards (mould and faecal contamination etc.) can also be included upon request within the scope of the audit.

See below for the Audit Request Checklist. If you can provide these details we can organise a your proposal promptly.

Hi Ryan

Hope your well.

We haven’t spoken previously but thought I would drop in an email. I just wanted to pass on how well Richard Whitlam did managing the project with us. He has been great to deal with and after a tricky start, Richard took the reins and made it an easy and smooth project. ‘He is’ a credit to Hazcon and has been a pleasure to deal with. The other boys also did a great job ‘with the’ inspections.

“I’ve had an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the team regarding the DG training you conducted in December last year. The team thought you were very knowledgeable and were able to convey the information across in an engaging and enjoyable manner. As you have visited our sites before, you understand how our business operates and was able to tailor the training to make it relevant and suitable to our needs. Everyone enjoyed the mock chemical spill evacuation drill and thought it was an invaluable experience. No doubt this demonstration will be run at my other sites as well.
One of our workers also mentioned that this was by the far the best training course he has ever attended!
I want to thank you again Andy for what you’ve taught us and I look forward to working with you and Kim again soon.”
